Wiedergutmachung : der Kleinkrieg gegen die Opfer
The author, a German physician, surveys the history of the restitution agreement enacted by West Germany in 1956, whereby an indemnity was granted to Jewish victims of Nazi persecution. Ch. 4 (pp. 185-274), "Gutachter und Opfer", shows by means of individual cases how German physicians deliberately created difficulties for applicants, which prolonged their suffering. They were accused of dramatizing their autobiographical reports and of exaggerating their illnesses. Many claims were delayed for years and finally refused.
