Surveys Nazi persecution of Jews and other groups, particularly the racial legislation, forced sterilizaton (including medical experiments in mass sterilization in Auschwitz), and the "euthanasia" program. Notes that the methods used to murder the mentally and physically handicapped were later applied to Jews. States that the known detention and death centers numbered 10,005 and divides them into 16 categories, among them the sites of the Einsatzgruppen massacres and the various types of ghetto, transit, labor, concentration, and extermination camps. For each category, discusses its development and special character, with quotations from Nazi directives and testimony given at war crimes trials. Describes the chief camps individually, and lists data and bibliographic sources for close to 2,000 sites. Includes bibliographical references (pages 225-248) and indexes. 268 pages ; 21 cm
