Entretiens avec Serge Klarsfeld
A series of interviews in which Klarsfeld discusses his family background, the period of his youth (growing up in Paris), his studies, his meeting with Beate and their activities to uncover Nazi war criminals, and their struggle for truth about the Jewish victims of the Holocaust in France and ways of preserving their memory. Describes their actions to bring to justice Nazis living in Germany who operated in France during the war, among them Kurt Lischka and Herbert Hagen whose trials took place in Köln in 1979. The Klarsfelds' actions contributed to the ratification of the law in Germany which allows the trial there of Nazis responsible for deporting French Jews. Discusses the trials of Barbie, Bousquet, and Touvier. Relates his role in changing the Holocaust memory in France. The appearance of his "Mémorial de la déportation des Juifs de France" (1978) was the beginning of a growing consciousness in France of the truth about the Vichy regime. Mentions, as well, Beate's interventions against antisemitism in various countries, and underlines the necessity to continue the struggle for memory and justice in Germany and France.
