Aux prises avec Vichy : histoire politique des Juifs de France, 1940-1944
A study of the activities of the Jewish institutions in France during the Vichy regime, based on archival material, especially protocols of meetings of the Consistoire Central des Israelites de France. Argues that activities of the Consistoire and of the Grand Rabbinat helped UGIF (Union Generale des Israelites de France), created in November 1941, not to become a Judenrat. The Consistoire, through its protests, declarations, and negotiations with Vichy authorities was able to slow the actions of the Commissariat general aux Questions juives, to curb the application of discriminatory measures, and to help some Church representatives to take a stance against anti-Jewish measures. Concludes that Jewish leaders in France prevented the UGIF from becoming a corrupt Judenrat, and in this way contributed to the fact that three-quarters of French Jewry was saved.
