Lies Vernimmen. Collection

Kazerne Dossin Research Centre This collection contains two stamps showing two different anti-Semitic caricatures designed by illustrator Carlo Deliën, who went by the pseudonyms Olrac and Heraus. Lies Vernimmen bought a home whose household effects included two stamps. These stamps feature anti-Semitic caricatures made by printer and illustrator Carlo Deliën. He created numerous anti-Jewish caricatures under the pseudonyms Olrac and Heraus. Together with René Lambrichts and Pierre Beeckmans, Carlo founded the NV De Belgische Uitgaven (French: Les Editions Belge). This NV took care of the publications of the Nationaal Corporatief Arbeidsverbond (NACO/LINACO) and distributed from 8 July 1933 onwards the periodical "De Stormloop" (The rush), by analogy with Julius Streicher's infamous "Der Sturmer", which was distributed in Germany. Carlo's caricatures were printed in this magazine. NACO was discontinued at the end of 1936. In 1937 René Lambrichts himself founded Volksverwering/Volkswering (French: La Défense du Peuple), an anti-Jewish organisation of the extreme right, active in Belgium until 1944. Carlo himself was also a member of this organisation. On 4 March 1937 Carlo founded the partnership Graphicolor in Antwerp, which from then on printed "Volksverwering", including caricatures from Carlo. On paper he had only his mother as a partner, who contributed 40 thousand francs. He himself signed for 60 thousand francs. Where the money really came from has not been investigated. Per printed copy of "Volksverwering", Carlo van Lambrichts earned 25 to 30 cents, and per caricature 100 fr. During the war, he also collaborated with other collaborating papers such as “De ss-Man”, “Volk aan den Arbeid”, and “Volksche Aanval”. After the liberation of Belgium, the Flemish and Walloon wing of Volksverwering were prosecuted. Carlo Deliënwas sentenced to fourteen years in prison and disappeared from view upon release.
