Documentation from the Medizinalkollegium (Medical Council) in Hamburg

The Medizinalkollegium (Medical Council) replaced the Gesundheitsrat (Health Council) in 1870 as the organization which supervised the administration of the entire healthcare system. A new organization - the Gesundheitsbehörde, was created in 1920 for the supervision of health matters, to which its functions were transferred and, to which the functions that had previously belonged to the Krankenhauskollegium (Hospitals Council) and the Polizeiärztlichem Dienst der Polizeibehörde (Police-Medical Services of the Police Supervisor) were added. In 1938 the functions of the Health Supervisor were divided between the Staatsverwaltung - Allgemeine Abteilung (General department of the Hamburg State administrator) and the Gesundheitsverwaltung der Gemeindeverwaltung (Health administrator of the Hamburg municipal administration). In 1945 this division was cancelled, and the supervision over the healthcare and veterinary services was transferred to the Gesundheitsverwaltung (Health administrator).

In the record group are documents of all of these organizations from the archive of origin. The most important subjects are: Medizinalpersonal (medical personnel); pharmacies; medicines; food products; Öffentliche Hygiene (public hygiene) - mainly problems related to the ecology; Soziale Hygiene (social hygiene and, including among other matters, "Erb und Rassenpflege" (the handling of matters related to origin and race), starting in 1933; the struggle against epidemics; medical institutions; and veterinarian services.

In the collection are documents that were copied for Yad Vashem, including lists of physicians and medical students; directives and instructions of the Reich government and the Hamburg area authorities, and the Reich health authorities, regarding the employment of physicians and medical staff personnel who are of Jewish origin; medical studies for Jews, and the medical care and rights of Jewish patients; personal files of Jewish physicians; files regarding various subjects related to medicine and medical institutions (for instance, supervision over blood donations).
