Collection of De Joodsche Raad voor Amsterdam (Jewish Council of Amsterdam) in the Netherlands, 1941-1944

 The Nazis ordered the Jewish communities in many of the occupied countries to establish a Jewish council; following the anti-Jewish riots in Amsterdam on 12/02/1941, Dr. Hans Böhmcker ordered industrialist Abraham Asscher to establish a Jewish council, De Joodsche Raad voor Amsterdam, which would represent city's Jews at its start. Later on, the Jewish council, under the leadership of Abraham Asscher and Dr. David Cohen, handled the matters of all of the Jews in the Netherlands opposite the German occupation authorities; De Joodsche Raad voor Amsterdam helped the community members who paid dues to the council, issued travel permits or moving permits, and distributed a publication called "Het Joodsche Weekblad". De Joodsche Raad handed over names of Jews for deportation and names of businesses for Aryanization to the Germans; the council obtained exemptions for council members and their family members; when Jews ceased to present themselves in camps according to the deportation lists, the Germans carried out Razzia (round-ups) in the Jewish neighborhoods and deported all of the Jews; the Germans abolished De Joodsche Raad on 29/09/1943 and sent [deported] Asscher and Cohen to concentration camps;
