The Royal Air Force in 1927 required a replacement for their current elementary trainers, the elderly Avro 504Ns. They specified that the power plant should be an Armstrong Siddeley Mongoose engine, a radial five-cylinder type, and the design should "have regards to the elimination of the Woodworking Fitter trades." In other words: the airframe, though not its covering had to be metal. This led Sydney Camm, then chief designer at Hawker to design the Tomtit, a single bay biplane whose frame was of steel and duralumin tubes. The spars were made of tubular dumbbell sections, the whole aircraft fabric covered. Automatic slats of the Handley Page type were fitted to the leading edges of the upper wing. It had the standard fixed main wheel and tail-skid undercarriage of its day. The engine was uncowled. Foto boven rechts: De Miles M.14 Magister was een licht lesvliegtuig uit de jaren 1930, ontworpen door Frederick George Miles en gebouwd door Phillips & Powis Aircraft Ltd. voor Miles Aircraft. Het toestel was bedoeld voor de elementaire vliegopleiding. De Magister was de eerste eendekker die specifiek werd ontworpen als trainer voor de Royal Air Force en werd gebouwd naar aanleiding van Air Ministry Specification T.40/36 uit 1936. De Lancaster werd vooral door de Royal Air Force gebruikt. Foto onder rechts: De Supermarine Spitfire was een Brits jachtvliegtuig. Het toestel werd in 1938 in productie genomen door Supermarine Division, Vickers Armstrong Ltd.. Het toestel werd gedurende de gehele Tweede Wereldoorlog ingezet door de geallieerden, voornamelijk door de RAF. Er werden in totaal 20.340 stuks gebouwd.[1] Daarnaast bestond ook nog de variant Seafire, waarvan er 2.594 werden gebouwd
