Harold Gilman (1917-1999) was born in Denver, CO, and served with the United States Army 11th Armored Division. In May 1945, the division liberated the Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps in Austria. Gilman used his camera to document the camps.

Litman Turovsky (1854-1941) lived in Rėchytsa, Belarus. Beginning in 1910, he kept a diary recording events in his daily life. Litman continued to make entries in his diary until July 1941. He, along with other Jews in Rėchytsa were shot and buried in a mass grave sometime between late August and September, 1941.

Laura Selo was the oldest of three sisters who were brought up in a middle class assimilated Jewish family in Berlin. The family later moved to Prague and the girls came to Great Britain on one of the 'Nicholas Winton' trains. Grete Gumpel, Laura's mother perished in a mass grave in Chelmno on 15 May 1942. Laura's father managed to escape to Great Britain and was intened during the war.
