William Guttmann (1904-1986) was born in Gliwice, Poland (Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia), the son of a Jewish publican and distiller. He studied law in Munich then emigrated to Italy after the Nazi seizure of power. He arrived in England shortly before the outbreak of war. Through his brother, the eminent psychiatrist, Eric Guttmann, he was introduced to David Astor, the proprietor of The Observer newspaper. ...

Tijd zonder klokken speelt op een later tijdstip, namelijk op Goede Vrijdag in 1943. Op die dag worden ook in Gleiwitz de klokken uit de kerktorens gehaald om te worden gesmolten. Dat terkt veel aandacht, meer dan de deportatie van een groep joden, die op een laadperron bij een groter transport worden gevoegd.
